What a great beach-read. Or for that matter, any time of the year read. Whispers really drew you in right from the start. I couldn't put it down. It is beautifully written, the story and it's characters are captivating. I love historical fiction, and Whispers was a perfect combination of history, family drama, suspense, and spirituality. Way to go, I Highly recommend this book. It would be a terrific book-club book, so many aspects to discuss.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Whispers from St. Mary's Well." It's well-written and kept my interest even though my typical reading fare doesn't slant toward the historical or period pieces. Kenny has a masterful command of language and prose without being overbearing. I will definitely purchase more books by this author.
I really enjoyed this book. It is set in St. Mary's County, which was a Southern-sympathizing county in a Northern state. I learned a lot about this time period by reading the book. The author clearly did a lot of research about what life was like during this time period.
My book club enjoyed discussing the book. It comes with questions at the end to help spark discussion. I give the book five stars!

Indeed, in a moving and heartbreaking but very hopeful way, she finally manages to recreate a better past (and thus future) for herself and for those around her. This wonderful book by Carol Kenny is a soulful trip into the past. It takes you to a time you've heard about, read about and longed to know more about. Carol Kenny's first book, "Whispers from St. Mary's Well" is storytelling at its best. An historical fiction, Whispers from St. Mary's Well is a novel with characters many of us can relate to in our own family history. Caroline, a delicate child, who saw so much tragedy at such a young age, brings memories of stories of my paternal grandmother to mind. The well crafted plot and development of the characters Zeke and Gorton offer reminders of the many biases of our not so distant past.
From darkness and despair to the strength of the human spirit Ms. Kenny brings a story full of metaphors and vivid descriptions bringing the world of St. Mary's county in the 1800's fully to life. With a plot that pulls you in and compels you to read more, the mystery is carefully revealed making this novel an enjoyable read for a busy person! Thank you, Carol!
