Rose Sandy writes entertaining and captivating stories. The characters are people the reader would like to meet, and--even though they are revealed to us so as to slowly get us to know more and more about them, we do learn enough early on to enjoy watching them in action. The settings are superb. Ms Sandy has traveled extensively and has lived for extended periods in many parts of the world. She takes us to those places and makes us see and experience them when they serve as locations in the story.For this current volume 2 in the series I highly recommend you read book 1 first. Book 2 assumes the reader will understand references back to book 1 as well as the characters of book 1. I would recommend in future editions the author add a synopsis of the previous volume as a forward to the next. It had been some time since I read the first volume and so some references left me trying to dig back in memory to fill in some gaps.
Ms Sandy still needs to engage a good editor for her books. Her first book was packed with spelling errors, continuity mishaps, dangling participles, and faulty punctuation (though none of that will spoil your enjoyment of the story). This second volume has fewer errors, but they still jump out at the reader. Misplaced commas and odd use of other marks still appear. Spelling errors spellcheck would not flag will be caught by the reader (an example: in one passage something is done to "alert" the other characters. But in the book the word is "alter" instead of "alert."
Ms Sandy seems sometimes to rely on too much on a thesaurus for varying verbs. She has characters "mincing" and "slithering" when those words, at least as I understand them, would not fit.
That will all improve as the author gains more experience (and gets a good editor). Meanwhile read these two volumes and wait eagerly, as I am, for Book 3.

Another great, fast paced, engrossing novel. I enjoyed book 1 and book 2 is proving to be just as entertaining. The plot and the story draw you in and keep you there, at times it is difficult to put down, when life calls you back. Love it and cannot wait for book 3!!!!
I gave this book 5 stars because I was truly impressed!
I was swept up in a whirlwind of action right up till the last page !
The characters are great and trap you in curiosity to a point where you just can't put the book down.
I definitely recommend buying this book, you will not be disappointed!
I'm torn, it could have been so much better. I enjoyed the story, but the inane adjectives are disconcerting. Here are a few examples, "Her feet hobbled in awkward steps on the carpet as she slithered..." "She swerved out of the parking space and growled away..." "Mason had gorged at a personal nerve..." what does that mean? I was frustrated while reading and not from some profound thought the author is trying to get across, but because I would be brought up short by word choice. You might enjoy the story, if you can get past all of the mis-used words.
Please, please Rose, have your book proofed by a reputable editor, for the sake of the reader.

Calla Cress, still reeling from her recent discoveries, is thrown right back into danger. This is an exhilarating read that will have you begging for more. Covert Interference is a riveting follow up to the Deveron Manuscript.
